Once the final coat of varnish is well dried and hard, the violin is polished. The first
polishing is done with 400-grit sandpaper and water. The second polishing is with 600-grit paper
and water. This is followed by pumice with light oil. The oil is a mixture of oil, water, and
turpentine. It is critical at all times to polish lightly, so as not to break through the
varnish layers.
Final polishing is done with Lime Powder or Diatomaceous Earth.
Finally, the violin can be polished to a gloss with a commercial violin polish.
